Hey! I’m Lucas Smarker.

I’m an animator / surfer based in Glendale, CA. As a kid, I noticed the individual frames of Jack Skeletington’s movement in The NightMare Before Christmas, so I became curious to try animation for myself. I started creating my own animated films when I was 12 years old with a cheap digital camera, paper, and/or clay. I was hooked! As I grew up, I looked for colleges that had alumni working in the animation industry in my area. Cal State Fullerton had alumni working at DreamWorks at the time, so I went there to study Fine Art and 3D Animation.

My professional career started in 2016. Since then, I have been fortunate enough to have worked in VFX, Games, VR, Commercials, TV, and Short Films. Some of the projects I've worked on include: Taylor Swift music videos, NBA2K22, Tales From Soda Island, Coco Melon, and The Walking Dead. I have even helped get films into the Tribeca, SXSW, and Venice film festivals. My favorite projects are the ones that have a stylized art direction that allow for a more cartoony animation style, and have a team of artists that like to laugh. Also, I have a passion for managing other artists, I would love to fulfill more leadership roles in the future.

When I’m not working, I’m either at the beach, on a hike, or doing personal art.

I take on freelance bookings for storyboarding, previz/layout, and animation.
